Mother's Day should bring fond
remembrances of how our own mothers loved, sacrificed and
served us as we were growing up. Our relationship
should continue long after we leave home in honoring them
with counsel and love. In a society that doesn't give
much gratitude to mothers' who gave up or severely altered
a career outside the home in order to raise children in
Godly ways, we should take time to honor them on every occasion
that is offered to us. This is especially so
in one parent households where mothers must work, while
trying to care for their covenant children without a father!
Our first ministry should always be to our family.
What a witness to the world if we are so busy helping others
that our own children are lost to the world! The nurture
of Godly mothers is mentioned throughout Scripture.
The Apostle Paul speaks of the devotion of Timothy's mother
and grandmother (Lois and Eunice), Paul mentions the kindness
of other women throughout the Epistles.
Perhaps the best summary of the Godly characteristics of
a wife and mother is found in Proverbs 31. Some people
are quickly overwhelmed by the long list of accomplishments
of a noble wife. We should keep in mind that this
is a life work, not a glimpse of "one day in the life of
a super wife/mother". The key verses are summarized
in the fact that such a woman is a rare find, like a precious
jewel. Her husband has full confidence in her, she
is not idle but fills her day (and night) with many
excellent things, and therefore her children arise
and call her "blessed". Her husband's final statement
says it all: "Many women do noble things, but you surpass
them all. Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting,
but a woman who feared the Lord is to be praised.
Give her the reward she has earned and let her works bring
her praise at the city gate."
In talking to many mothers who are concerned about the character
of their children, Children's Ministry International has
introduced three volumes of the "Christian
Character Curriculum". These volumes list character
qualities that are found in the Bible, defines them, visualizes
them, gives Bible stories where they are found, has a long
list of games and exercises where the child can be shown
examples of how this quality is played out day to day and
has a "character chart" where activities the child does
exemplifying the character quality are listed along side
of where the child has seen this quality in others.
Godly mothers sometimes ask me what they can do to get daily
family devotions started in their busy homes. Too
often
fathers feel inadequate in starting and sustaining them.
CMI has three
devotion booklets with a year's worth (maybe more!)
of family devotions using the Westminster Confession of
Faith Shorter Catechism as an outline to ensure your children
know the basics of the Christian faith. These are
comprehensive in that they have prayers, songs, Bible Stories,
definitions and applications to each of the questions and
they are small enough to fit into your Bible!

2. Have you ever wanted
to do a quick lesson for children when there is a Woman's
or Couple's Bible Study, but instead just put on another
"Veggie Tales" video? Well, with the
Christian Character Curriculum (in three $12.50 volumes)
you can choose a character quality---such as, patience or
forgiveness. In the next 45 minutes your children
will learn the biblical definition, be able to visualize
and color a Bible memory verse, have time to learn all about
the quality in several Bible stories, play activities where
the character quality is clearly shown and have a chart
of how the child saw the character quality in him/herself
or in others.
Like all of CMI products you can use this over and over
again, you can expand the lesson to fit your schedule and
it adapts to multiple ages!

4. CMI
teachers to teach overseas!
Every year several (sometimes over 20) CMI teachers go overseas
to teach at Mission conferences doing the children's program
so that busy missionary parents have time to concentrate
on their program. Last year CMI went to Greece with
Mission to the World to do their Europe/Africa Regional
Conference and then to England to do the Leadership Conference
for Frontiers ministry. Between the two trips we took
over 25 teachers.
Find out how you might be able to
get involved. If you have had experience in teaching
the "Bible Building Blocks of the Faith" curriculum and
can raise your traveling expenses, please consider joining
us. This year we are planning on going to Latin American
with Mission to the World. We've done MTW (the missionary
arm of the Presbyterian Church in America-PCA) conference
for 25 years all over the world. Other mission agencies
we have helped include: Arab World Ministries, Wycliffe
Bible Translators and Frontiers.
