CMI
FOUNDER PASTOR HANK THIGPEN PASSES
AWAY
On
August 20, retired Army officer (LTC, Army Corps of
Engineers), PCA pastor and one of the founders of the
Presbyterian Church of America, and one of three
founders of Children's Ministry International (CMI) ,
Hank Thigpen passed away in Florence, AL. In 1982, Hank
and Carolyn Thigpen incorporated CMI into a non-profit
and began producing children's materials out of their
Tucker, GA home. Maybe some of our readers remember Hank
and Carolyn Thigpen giving a CMI teacher's training
seminar at their church. They also traveled around the
world organizing and teaching the children's programs at
Mission to the World Missionary conferences. Without
Hank and Carolyn's devoted sacrifice and service, CMI
never would have been able to publish and translate the
material available today in English, Spanish and many
other languages. In 1997, Hank and Carolyn Thigpen
retired from CMI and moved from the Atlanta area to be
close to relatives in northwestern Alabama. Hank had
battled Alzheimer's disease for the past 12 years.
The moving memorial service was held in at Redeemer
Presbyterian Church in Florence, AL on August 25th.
Terry Thigpen, Hank's son, gave a poignant story of
Hank's very productive life with lots of personal family
stories. It was a wonderful opportunity for friends and
relatives to recall the many achievements of Hank's life
of service from building bridges in France and Germany
during World War II to founding of and traveling with
CMI. The internment of Hank's body in Florence, AL
received full military honors. Hank is survived by his
wife of over 65 years, Carolyn Thigpen, and their three
living children Joy, Terry and Susan along with many
grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Gifts in memory of founder Hank Thigpen may be given to
the CMI ministry (please send them to 2368 Main St. #3,
Tucker, GA 30084). The Thigpen family will be notified
of all such gifts.
"Blessed in the sight of the Lord is the death of His
dear ones" Psalm 116:15.
